“In strictness and propriety of moral conduct he certainly stands singularly prominent in the annals of military history.”

Those are the words of the author of this book, Andrew Crichton.  Lieutenant Colonel John Blackader was an accomplished and successful soldier in both the Nine Years’ War and War of the Spanish Succession, who retired with words of admiration from no less than John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, but Blackader’s fame is not derived from soldiering.

What we have here instead is a story about a phenomenally spiritual man in circumstances we don’t usually hear about: not a martyr nor a hero standing up for his religious beliefs nor a member of the clergy dedicating his life to the Good Word, but a soldier trying his very best to live a virtuous and spiritual life in the midst of all-out, continent-wide war.  His phenomenal spirituality in the worst possible conditions for such, is the source of John Blackader’s fame.

The story of the wars and circumstances in which he was involved are herein combined by Mr. Crichton with the words of Mr. Blackader’s own diary to draw a portrait of a Christian soldier doing his best to remain faithful to God while fighting a war.
